When the keiki need room to run and your wallet needs a break, Hoʻomaluhia Botanical Garden in Kāneʻohe is hard to beat: 400 free acres at the foot of the Koʻolau, about 30 minutes from town. Wide meadows, easy paths, a lake, and some of the best mountain views on the island.
- Where: 45-680 Luluku Rd, Kāneʻohe (a Honolulu Botanical Gardens site)
- Hours: daily 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
- Cost: free admission, free parking
- Good for: stroller-friendly walks, picnics, wide-open run-around space, little ones who like ducks and fish by the lake
Weekend bonus — catch-and-release fishing. Saturdays and Sundays, roughly 10 a.m.–2 p.m., kids can fish the lake (catch-and-release). Bring your own gear.
Tips: it can get muddy after rain, so closed-toe shoes win. Pack water and snacks; there’s no store inside. Mornings are cooler and quieter.
